Labour's Victory: What it means for the future

As election fever subsides, we are eagerly waiting to see what happens next. Out of all the political parties Labour were the most ambitious in terms of their reforms around employment law and, with a commitment to make some key changes within 100 days of being elected, employers should prepare for significant changes ahead.

As a reminder, the Labour Manifesto committed to the following:


  • Banning Exploitative Zero Hours Contracts: Targeting exploitative practices rather than implementing an outright ban.
  • Ending Fire and Rehire: Prohibiting the practice of firing employees and rehiring them on less favourable terms.
  • Day 1 Rights: Introducing rights to sick pay, parental leave, and unfair dismissal from the first day of employment.
  • Single Enforcement Body: Establishing a single body to enforce workers’ rights.
  • Minimum Wage Reforms: Including cost of living in minimum wage criteria and removing age bands.
  • Accurate Contracts: Ensuring contracts reflect the hours employees regularly work, based on a twelve-week reference period.
  • Extended Tribunal Time Limits: Extending time limits for claims from three months to six months.
  • Menopause Action Plans: Requiring large employers (those with more than 250 employees) to have a menopause action plan.
  • Carer's Leave Review: Reviewing the provision and benefits of introducing paid carers' leave.
  • Pay Gap Reporting: Imposing duties on large employers to report ethnicity and disability pay gaps.
  • Union Rights Information: Informing new starters of their right to join a trade union.
  • Right to Switch Off: Introducing or at least encouraging employee discussing the right to switch off with employers.
  • Single Worker Status: Consulting on incorporating all but the genuinely self-employed into a single worker status.
  • Flexible Working Rights: Making flexible working the default unless employers have valid reasons to refuse.
  • Easier Union Recognition: Removing the requirement for 40% of entitled voters to validate a union recognition ballot.
  • Unpaid Compassionate Leave: Introducing a right to unpaid compassionate leave, beyond just parental leave.
  • Apprenticeships Levy Reform: Reviewing and reforming the Apprenticeships Levy.
